Like we have already mentioned, we have added a "Become a co-author button".

To activate this feature, simply change the settings of your design wizard and add the yellow "Co-author button" bar to your blog.

Yet another new feature here at BCUK. The co-author function has just been improved - in addition to the two current types (normal and moderator), there is now a new type - guest.

A guest co-author may only make posts that are visible to other co-authors, or save a post as 'Draft'. So it could be used as a 'trial period' for new authors, to have more control over your current co-authors or to facilitate completely private discussions between you and your chosen co-authors.

In addition to this, you can also display a blog's co-authors in the blog's sidebar. Just enter the Design Wizard in the usual way and drag and drop the module to where you would like it to appear.

The first nationwide blog.co.uk meetings are taking place at the end of this month. The venues and details are as follows:

    London – Sunday, November 25th.
    Brighton – Tuesday, November 27th.
    Manchester – Thursday, November 29th.
    Liverpool – Friday, November 30th.

Anyone interested in joining the parties should go to the relevant blog and make their presence known. Come on, help us make history!

Don't worry if you can't make it this year. The event's main organiser, the wonderful Rundontwalk, is planning for this to be an annual event. So keep your late November 2008 free!

They're coming thick and fast at the moment. Another new feature will go online today, and you'll find it when you click on an individual post on any blog. At the top you'll see two handy links to the previous post and the next post, like this:
    previous-next post links

Then, scrolling down to below the commment box, you'll see a list of the ten most recent posts in that blog, which looks something like this:
    Recent Posts

And just one more thing: In the Design Wizard, you now have the option to show your last posts in your sidebar. Just drag and drop it in the usual way.

At the moment, these features are not online for blogs built with FreeHTML, which at the moment is only this blog and the help blogs. But for all of your blogs, it's there right now.

    Feedback welcome, as always.

  • What does it mean to be a blogger?

Here in blog HQ, our attention was caught by this article discussing the connotations of the word 'blogger'. Most of them, to us, seem rather unsuitable - a quick perousal of the BCUK community shows that.

    • -A nobody that always wanted to write and thinks people will finally notice their talent online
    • -A lonely geek looking for attention
    • -A marketer that publishes promotional fluff as an attraction strategy for a product
    • -A depressed 9-to-5er that desperately wants to quit and work from home
    • -A get-rich-quick schemer that thinks blogging is the key to making millions online
    • -A lazy homebody looking for a source of passive income so they never have to work again
    • -An author that can’t get published
    • -A CEO that wants the board to think he’s on the cutting edge
    • -A techy tag along that starts a blog because everyone else has one

Source: 11 Meanings for Blogger You May Never Have Noticed

It appears to be a rather cynical attempt to tie the concept of making money to blogging, failing to bear in mind the human aspect of the experience.

So, what is a blogger really? Are we all really pathetic losers? Or does the BCUK community really make a difference to the people who take part in it, laugh in it, cry in it, bare their souls in it?

We think so. We are just people who are willing to reach out to other people in whatever way we can. And we make a difference.

As always, feel free to share your thoughts on this.

Just so you all know that we are real people here in blog HQ, and not little coloured plasticine men running around with pencils, here's a recent picture of the team.

No prizes for guessing who's who, but compliments are always welcome...;)

  • Two cool new features on BCUK

Just a quick post to let you all know about two small but significant new features here on BCUK.

As of this afternoon, you will be able to comment on all media files. Of course, you can set it up so that only registered users, friends, everyone or no-one can comment. Go to 'Profile' and click on the 'media' tab.
    Media Comment
So what are you waiting for? Get out there and start commenting!

The second new feature is 'Sticky Posts'. Sticky Posts allow you to make a post that always stay at the top of your blog. Very useful for giving background info on your blog, or maybe to make an announcement, or to highlight something you believe to be important. Set a post to sticky by clicking on the little '+' beside 'Properties' on the 'Write' screen.
This new feature should be up very soon, at the very latest by next week.

As always, we want to hear from you. Let us know what you think, regardless of whether your feedback is good, bad or indifferent.

    Thanks,
    your blog.co.uk team.

Here you can hear about all the latest blog.co.uk news. Comments are always welcome!
